Flameless Cremation FAQs

Flameless Cremation (Alkaline Hydrolysis)

Schrader Funeral Home & Crematory now offers Flameless Cremation, a gentle and environmentally responsible alternative to traditional flame cremation. While this process is not performed on-site, we have carefully inspected and evaluated Missouri’s first Alkaline Hydrolysis facility—its equipment, procedures, and professional staff—and we fully endorse the process with confidence.

What is Flameless Cremation?

Flameless Cremation—also known as Alkaline Hydrolysis, Water Cremation, Resomation, or Bio Cremation—is a natural process that uses 95% water and 5% alkaline solution to return the body to its basic elements.

How does Flameless Cremation work?

The remains are placed in a specially designed stainless-steel vessel. Warm water (not boiling) and a mild alkaline solution gently circulate for 8–12 hours, breaking down the body and leaving only bone material. The process is fully computer-controlled and carefully monitored by trained professionals. It is safe, dignified, and environmentally friendly.

Will I receive cremated remains?

Yes. Just like traditional cremation, the remaining bones are processed and returned to the family. The cremated remains are clean, sterile, and suitable for placement in an urn or keepsake.

What happens to medical devices or artificial joints?

Any medical devices or metal implants are recovered after the process and sent for recycling.

Is Flameless Cremation a proven process?

Yes. Alkaline Hydrolysis has been used for decades in medical and academic settings and is now available in the St. Louis area. Notably, the Mayo Clinic has utilized this process since 2006. The facility is operated under the supervision of a licensed funeral director and embalmer and is regulated and routinely inspected by the Missouri State Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors.

What happens to the remaining liquid?

The liquid byproduct is safely released into the standard wastewater system. Through the alkaline hydrolysis process, it is rendered free of pathogens and poses no environmental or public health risk.

Is Flameless Cremation more expensive?

Yes, Flameless Cremation typically costs more than traditional cremation. This reflects the advanced technology, specialized facility, and significant investment required to operate an Alkaline Hydrolysis unit.
